The Novelry is an internet-based school where writers learn how to improve their craft and create their own stories. The Novelry provides online courses led by professors who specialize in creative writing. The Novelry also provides students with personal assistance from professional teachers and a community of other students who will support them as they develop their writing skills. There are three things taught in creative writing that are vital for successful authors: use of symbolism, construction of a plot diagram, and understanding of point of view. Symbolism is when an author uses an object, character, or event to provide the reader with a further understanding of what they are trying to depict; for example, a storm can symbolize conflict while a key can symbolize opportunity or freedom. Symbolism, when used effectively, creates added depth and emotional power to the writing.
A plot diagram or narrative arc is used to aid in helping the writer build a story. Traditional plot diagrams have five parts - exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. By understanding this structure, writers are able to build tension throughout their story, keep their reader's interest and have a satisfying ending.
The writer must also understand how the choice of point of view affects the reader's experience with the characters and how the reader is going to relate to the writer's story. For example, first-person point of view ("I walked into the room"), second-person point of view ("You walked into the room") and third-person point of view ("She walked into the room") are all possible points of view for your story. After learning to use symbolism, create a plot diagram, and choose the right point of view, the students of The Novelry will be able to write interesting, meaningful stories that will be of a professional quality.
